Tunneling the Elbe river

1 June 2015

A.Hak Drillcon recently completed one of the most complex and challenging projects in its history. For this project, dubbed the ‘Elbedüker’, the drilling expert was selected as the main contractor by customers Gasunie Deutschland Transport Services, Open Grid Europe, Deutsche Telekom and WSA-Hamburg.

In this project, a tunnel with a 1,528 meter length was constructed under the Elbe River in Hetlingen, close to Hamburg. At that time it was the largest European tunnel project in progress. At a depth of 40 meters under the river, a concrete jacket pipe with a three meter diameter is installed. This pipeline will accommodate two high pressure gas pipelines that guarantee the gas supply for Northern Germany and Scandinavia.

As the main contractor, A.Hak Drillcon solved numerous technical challenges while fully complying with the stringent Quality, Health, Safety and Environment requirements.
